Understand the essential rites of Umrah, what to prepare before travelling and how to complete your pilgrimage with confidence.
What Is Umrah?
Umrah is the Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah that Muslims can perform throughout the year, subject to applicable Hajj-season regulations. It is an act of worship that includes entering ihram, performing tawaf around the Kaaba and completing sa'i between Safa and Marwa.
Unlike Hajj, Umrah does not have a fixed set of pilgrimage days. Learning its requirements before travelling can help you perform each rite correctly and focus on your worship.
The Main Steps of Umrah
- Prepare for ihram, make the intention for Umrah and enter ihram before crossing the applicable miqat.
- Recite the talbiyah and observe the restrictions of ihram on the journey to Makkah.
- Perform tawaf by completing seven circuits around the Kaaba.
- Perform sa'i by walking seven passages between Safa and Marwa, beginning at Safa and ending at Marwa.
- Men shave their heads or trim their hair, while women trim a small portion of their hair according to the applicable rulings.
- Complete the rites and leave the state of ihram once the required hair-cutting or shaving has been performed.
